No More Texting for Teens While Behind the Wheel

Story by Jeff Feldsher - October 14,2007
Taking your folks car out for a night on the town may never be the same. A new technology developed by San Diego based Drivecam, designed to curb the amount of teen car accidents, is currently under testing. Cameras mounted inside the vehicle are linked to motion sensors which can detect any sudden movements, such as abrupt acceleration/deceleration and swerving. The cameras then record both the young driver and the road ahead to determine the cause and any other mitigating factors. The aim is to eliminate any driver initiated accidents. Thus far teen reaction has been lukewarm, with 1 out of 20 participants simply choosing to cover the camera. Most of the teens citing invasion of privacy as their main concern since parents are now able to monitor them outside of the home. Use of cell phones or other electronic devices as expected is prohibited, however parents may now also be able to see where their children go and with whom. Footage is reviewed and analyzed weekly to provide feedback. Based on early data collected the program seems to be working. Crashes and injury levels have dropped dramatically when compared to the national average.

With teen accident rates many times higher than adult drivers, insurance companies are especially keen on the technology and are willing to offer substantial discounts to those that will eventually adopt the technology.
